I am a medical doctor trained in Neuropsychiatry and a neuroscientist.
I am particularly interested in combining pharmacological, cognitive and behavioural approaches to dopamine and noradrenaline modulation for the treatment of attention and memory deficits, mood dysregulation, impulsive and addictive behaviour, dyspraxia, and language impairment.
I have pioneered the use of a novel MRI method based on Diffusion Tractograhy for the study of brain connections crucial for the development of language, visual memory, attention, fine motor skills, social behaviour and emotions. I have applied Tractography to further our understanding of brain disorders like Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder, Stroke, Dementia, Traumatic Brain Injury and Brain Tumours. The results of my research have contributed to a better understanding of the underlying causes of these disorders and improve their diagnosis and treatment.
I have received several awards, written more than 120 scientific papers and had my work featured across the BBC, Reuters and CNN and many popular science magazines including Scientific American Mind, Science and the New Scientist. I am co-editor (Neuroanatomy section) and author of the 42nd edition of the Gray's Anatomy and have co-authored several other books that have been awarded international prizes.
I am one of the three international members that compose the medical committee of World Athletics federation responsible for anti-doping regulation (Therapeutic Use Exemption) and have provided expert opinion to the international Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
I am Professor of Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London and hold a Hon Consultant Psychiatrist position at the Adult ADHD Clinic, Maudsley Hospital and at the Low Grade Glioma Clinic, King's College Hospital.
